Google Loses In Belgium Newspaper Case
February 13th, 2007
A Belgian court ruled today that Google may not reproduce extracts from a variety of Belgian newspapers. Copiepresse, a copyright protection group representing 18 mostly French-language newspapers, had complained, that the Google’s cached links offered free access to archived articles that the papers usually sell on a subscription basis.
The court ordered Google to remove all articles, photos or links from Google News, that it displays without the newspapers permission.
In the future, it said it would be up to the copyright owners to get in touch with Google, to complain if the site was posting content that belonged to them. Google then has to remove the content within 24 hours or face a fine of 1,000 Euros ($1,300) daily.
