DMOZ Is Taking New Site Submissions Again

Seems, that DMOZ.org is accepting new site submissions again. After a lot of technical problems lately, DMOZ has disabled site suggestions and also most editor functions. Here is a status update from the Resource Zone Forum:

“The Site Suggestion, Update Listing, Editor Reinstatement, and Forgotten Password forms are available again. New editor applications are still disabled and we are still not able to check on the statuses of previous applications. As well, the public abuse reporting system, editor feedback, and any other feature for which the “Service Temporarily Unavailable” message is still appearing are still not available. We have no ETA for the return of the features which are still down. Please be patient and, again, we ask that you not start threads asking when those forms will be available again–we will update this announcement when we have further information.”

I hope the problems are over now!

2006 Google Zeitgeist is online

It seems like the 2006 Year-End Google Zeitgeist is online. It shows you the Top Searches, of the year, in different categories such as most popluar Wedding or Divorce search terms and also some graphic charts.

Google acquired Internet mapping solutions company

Today John Hanke, Director of Google Earth & Maps announced the acquisition of the Internet mapping solutions company Endoxon.

“Endoxon is a developer of internet mapping solutions, mobile services, data processing, cartography, direct marketing and the Trinity software suite. Since 1988, Endoxon and its 75 employees have created ground-breaking solutions for a wide variety of geographic needs. Endoxon is a pioneer in AJAX mapping technologies. Endoxon technologies enable the integration and processing of geo-referenced data and high-resolution aerial and satellite images for dynamic internet and mobile services.”

Seem, that Endoxon will build out and improve the functionality of Google Earth and Google Maps across Europe.

Google & Orange to release ‘Google phone’?

The Observer has information, that Google and the mobile phone operator Orange held talks about a partnership to create a special ‘Google phone’ which makes it easy to search the web wherever you are.

“Their plans centre on a branded Google phone, which would probably also carry Orange’s logo. The device would not be revolutionary: manufactured by HTC, a Taiwanese firm specialising in smart phones and Personal Data Assistants (PDAs), it might have a screen similar to a video iPod. But it would have built-in Google software which would dramatically improve on the slow and cumbersome experience of surfing the web from a mobile handset.”

Orange is owned by Europes second largest telecoms group the France Telecom, and keeps around 88.6 million mobile customers across 23 countries in touch.

Google partnered with GoDaddy and eNom to offer Domains

According to the their Official Blog, Google has partnered with the two domain registrars GoDaddy.com and eNom, to offer domain registration for their Google Apps service. This service allows organisations to set up private-label Gmail, Google Talk, Google Calendar, and customizable start pages for their custom domains. Until now, a organisation needed a already registered domain, to sign up for Google Apps. Now the domain can be registered at the sign up process. At the beginning there are .com, .net, .org, .biz, and .info domains available. The price for a domain is $10 per year and includes private registration.

Live.com top searches for 2006

The Live.com team has compiled a nice list of the most searched terms in 2006. The list contains different categories such as celebrity images, news, products, and travel. Because the FIFA World Cup this year, generated so many soccer related searches, they also added a list with the Top 10 soccer searches.

U.S. Patent Search at Google

Today Google announced the release of Google Patent Search, which allows you to search the full text of the U.S. patent corpus and find patents that interest you. The Patent Search uses the same technology that powers Google Book Search, so you can scroll through pages and zoom in on text and illustrations just like you can with books.
The Advanced Patent Search page allows you to search by criteria, including patent number, inventor, and filing date. At the moment there are 7 million patents of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) searchable.

If you are looking for worldwide patents, you should visit the site of the European Patent Office, which includes a database with more then 50 million patent documents from around the world.

IBM and Yahoo! to release Enterprise Search

IBM and Yahoo! will release a new add-on for IBM’s OmniFind Enterprise Edition, this wednesday. The software named “IBM Omnifind Yahoo Edition” will add Yahoo! data to the search results of OmniFind. The free edition can search a maximum of 500,000 documents, and 200 file types including PDF, Word and Excel. Google also offers different comercial Enterprise Solutions starting from $1,995 for 50,000 searchable documents.
